FIFA World Cup 2010 Opening Ceremony and Schedule of Matches

This year’s World Cup will have a “2-day opening” that would start on Thursday night. It would feature top music artist around the globe. To perform the official 2010 World Cup song, “Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)”, would be singer/songwriter Shakira. She will team up with a local South African group Freshlyground.

Other than these artists, John Legend, Alicia Keys, the Black Eyed Peas, and Colombian heart-throb rocker Juanes. Top African musicians such as Amadou and Mariam, The Parlotones and Angelique Kidjo, will also be there.

Proceeds from the concert on Thursday night will be used for 20 Centers for 2010 - a charity campaign dedicated to building twenty Football for Hope Centres for public health, education and football across Africa.

As for Friday’s actual opening ceremony before the game between the hosts and Mexico, performances to be expected are rather a secret. FIFA opted to do it this way to keep expectations and excitement high.

Bafana Bafana coach Carlos Parreira has announced a 29-man squad that will take part in the final training camp in preparation for the 2010 FIFA World Cup starting in June.

The announcement was made in Johannesburg today shortly after Bafana Bafana’s return to South Africa following a 19-day training camp in Germany. This is the fourth and final training camp for the senior men’s national team.

It all started in Durban in January, then Brazil in March, Germany in April while the last one starts on Tuesday (May 5) in Johannesburg.

According to the coach, he has announced 29 players because it is not certain when the overseas-based players will arrive – some around May 16 while others a week later as per FIFA rules.

Fulham's marvellous season continued with a 3-2 home win over West Ham United.

Clint Dempsey opened the scoring on the stroke of half-time and an own goal by Carlton Cole put them 2-0 ahead shortly after the re-start.

Cole redeemed himself when he headed West Ham back into the match but substitute Stefano Okaka made it 3-1 to Fulham in the 79th minute. West Ham substitute Guillermo Franco scored an injury-time goal for the visitors but it was to no avail.

The former Southampton defender produced a series of outstanding attacking performances, helping Spurs remain on course to finish the season in fourth spot in the Barclays Premier League.

The Welsh international's marauding displays on the left flank have impressed many this season.

In April he had his most productive month this season netting the decisive goals in the consecutive 2-1 home successes over north London rivals Arsenal, and title favourites Chelsea, to claim his first strikes of the season. He also set up the equaliser against Manchester United at Old Trafford although Spurs eventually lost the match.

Tottenham took another step towards Champions League qualification with a 1-0 win over Bolton thanks to a superb strike from Tom Huddlestone.

Rooney named Footballer of the Year

Wayne Rooney has been voted the 2010 Footballer of the Year by the Football Writers' Association.

The Manchester United striker topped the poll of journalists with just over 81 per cent of a record votes cast, finishing ahead of Chelsea forward Didier Drogba and Manchester City's Carlos Tevez to win the prestigious accolade which has been running since 1948.

The 24-year-old - who has led the Reds Devils' challenge to Chelsea for the Barclays Premier League title, scoring some 34 goals in all competitions - will receive his award at the FWA's gala dinner at The Lancaster London Hotel on 13th May.

"I am delighted to win an award with so much history and tradition and to follow a long line of wonderful players who have been honoured by the Football Writers' Association since 1948 gives me real pride," said Rooney.

"I would like to take this opportunity to thank my manager at United, Sir Alex Ferguson, the coaching staff and my team-mates, without whose help and support this award would not have been possible.

"Also a big thanks to my family and friends for their constant support which is always appreciated.

The Barclays Premier League title race could be decided on Sunday as the season reaches boiling point.

Leaders Chelsea will clinch the crown if they win at Liverpool and rivals Manchester United lose at Sunderland.

Any other combination of results will see this intriguing tussle go right to the final day of what has been a thrilling campaign.

It is a double-header full of delicious angles and ironies befitting such an exciting season.

First, Liverpool will be out to bounce back from their Europa League disappointment as they host a Chelsea side aiming to win the title for the first time since 2006.

fierce rivals

The Anfield aces are desperate for victory to keep alive their hopes of finishing fourth and securing a Champions League place.

But if they do take points off the Londoners, they know it will also enhance the title chances of their fierce rivals United who are looking to surpass the Merseysiders' total of 18 top-flight crowns.

Liverpool have already pledged to ignore that particular issue as they go all out for the three points in their final home fixture.

That match is followed by the Red Devils' visit to a Sunderland side managed by former Old Trafford favourite Steve Bruce, the man who played such a pivotal role in United's first Premier League success with his season-turning late double against Sheffield Wednesday in 1993.

He will now be out to try and stop his old club from winning a record fourth successive crown.

Anything less than victory for Sir Alex Ferguson's men would surely hand the title to Carlo ancelotti's side.

But if the top two both win then it will set up a mouth-watering final day decider on 9th May when Chelsea host Wigan Athletic and United are at home to Stoke City.

It is an intriguing end to the season which sees both sides in form.

Chelsea showed no signs of nerves as they thumped Stoke City 7-0 while United left it late to see off Champions League chasers Tottenham Hotspur.

With a one-point advantage, the London side are favourites but United midfielder Darren Fletcher is not ready to throw in the Barclays Premier League title towel just yet.

He said: "We are relying on a favour from another team, which is not the best position to be in, but we are coming into form.

"We had that week where things didn't go well, against Blackburn and Bayern, and there was a real low in the squad.

"But we had to pick ourselves up. There was a conscious effort around the place not to feel sorry for ourselves. We couldn't afford to.

"We needed to put some pressure on Chelsea, which is what we have done."

But Salomon Kalou, who fired a hat-trick against Stoke, believes his side must be ruthless as the Barclays Premier League gears up for a grandstand finish.

"I think we have to win. There's two games to go and there's no other way of going about it," said the Ivory Coast frontman.

"If you want to keep your chance at your end, you have to win every game.

"I hope United will go to Sunderland and drop points, but you can only focus on your own game.

"If we take the three points against Liverpool, we don't need to worry about what United will do.

Diego Forlan returned to England tonight to deliver the killer blow to Liverpool's European hopes...

Liverpool crashed out of Europe tonight as a late goal from Diego Forlan saw Atletico Madrid progress to the Europa League final.

It truly was a flood of red in the first five minutes, as the hosts bombarded the Atletico goal with a flurry of chances. Yossi Benayoun was the first to go close as he went free after a through ball from Dirk Kuyt, but the Israeli's attempt to beat a capable David De Gea at his front post was thwarted.

Finding it difficult to inject any measure of authority into the game, having no joy centrally or on either flank, Atletico were on the back foot for the entirety of the early exchanges.

Having finally broken in his Liverpool shoes, Alberto Aquilani showed his intent early in the game too, striking on target from 20 yards. Again though, De Gea's firm grasp made sure the scoreline remained 0-0.

Warming up at last, the Madrid side had their first sniff at goal after a lovely long-ball from Valera found its way into the path of Diego Forlan after a nudge in the right direction from the head of Sergio Aguero. However, the imposing figure of Jamie Carragher was enough to keep the Uruguayan's run in check.

This seemed to spark some life into the visitors, as Raul Garcia's venomous shot from range looked destined for the net before being expertly parried by Pepe Reina, and Forlan began taking on defenders, albeit with little to show for his efforts.

Patrolling his flank well, Atleti captain Antonio Lopez leaped forward to help out a struggling Simao on the left. Winning a free kick for his side, the defender returned to his post at left back as he watched the winger fruitlessly deliver the set piece.

With Liverpool's chances on goal beginning to dry up, Kuyt and Ryan Babel began to drop deeper and alternate roles as they looked to help the play on its way.

The bold moves made by the forwards began to pay off, as some beautiful one-touch football ended after a glorious cross from Javier Mascherano found Kuyt on the six-yard-line, although the Dutchman inexplicably managed to knock it over the bar from a position right in front of an empty net.

Thinking he had made up for Kuyt's mistakes, Daniel Agger scored with a powerful header after the half-hour mark, but the Dane's goal was adjudged to be offside and the deadlock remained unbroken.

As he so often does, Steven Gerrard took matters into his own hands as the first half began to wind down, striking at goal twice within a matter of minutes. However, the captain's attempts were culled by the hands of De Gea and a wicked deflection from the back of Benayoun.

Aguero thought he had capitalised on some uncharacteristic play from Gerrard soon after as the Liverpool skipper lost the ball in his own half. Dragging down the Argentine to regain possession, the red number 8 found himself in the book.

Two minutes from the break, Anfield erupted. Scoring his second goal for Liverpool, Aquilani found himself in the right place at the right time after Benayoun lost his marker well enough on the right flank to deliver a beautiful cross into the box. Rattling it first time, the Italian found the bottom right hand corner of De Gea's net before the young 'keeper could react.

As the teams poured out, both eager to get the second half started for the exact same reason, the sides were perhaps a little too heated in their attempts to take the next 45 minutes by the scruff of the neck. Paulo Assuncao managed to get his name in the book after scything Gerrard to the ground, joined by Aquilani who was shown yellow for shirt pulling.

Dancing off three or four challenges by the Liverpool defence, Jose Antonio Reyes held the ball well before teeing up an onrushing Simao. A poor shot by the winger sailed high over the bar, leaving some lucky fan with a souvenir.

Continuing as he started, the heavily influential Aquilani almost turned provider as he slid the ball to Kuyt with the Dutchman running into plenty of space. Too hasty in his decision making, the forward shot at goal himself, prompting an easy save from De Gea and a few choice words from a looming Benayoun.

A decent ball was swung into the box after some nice play between Simao and Lopez, but the forwards just couldn't rise high enough to connect. Reyes quickly took charge of the ball, letting rip from the edge of the area, but the ball came off the back of Gerrard and rebounded out to safety.

For all the failed attempts, there was definitely a sense of urgency about the visitors now, but their frustration at failing to find a way through was summed up when Raul Garcia drilled one in from outside the box that was always too high to trouble Reina.

Then, having his name mentioned for possibly the first time since the first five minutes of the game, Glen Johnson picked up the ball on the left before cutting inside and striking straight at goal. Covering it the entire time, De Gea saw the ball went over the bar before the ref blew the whistle to mark the end of 90 minutes and the beginning of extra time.

Before five minutes of extra time had room to pass, the second goal of the game was scored. After a scrap inside Atletico's box, the ball fell to the feet of Lucas Lieva, who dinked the ball over a sea of Spanish faces to find Benayoun creeping at the back post.

Still with work to do, the Israel captain found the space to shot from an acute angle, seeing his shot finally rest in the side of the net after a fingertip touch from De Gea.

A powerful strike from Forlan looked like it might trouble Reina, as the shot pounded back out off the 'keeper's chest. Struggling to clear the rebound, the Reds had to endure a flurry of attempts before the ball went back out to safety.

Jose Manuel Jurado almost got himself the title of super-sub as he belted a shot towards goal, shaving the side of the upright as it sailed out to safety.

Feeling that they had done everything they needed to go through, the hosts were soon in for a shock. On the right flank, Reyes got goalside of Glen Johnson before squaring the ball wonderfully for Forlan. With nothing left to do but knock the ball in the right direction, the Uruguayan's boot saw the travelling fans erupt in celebration as the net shook.

On a slightly sour note, the first half of extra time ended after a fracas in the Atletico box involving Dirk Kuyt and a selection of travelling defenders. Despite not being originally involved in the ruckus, Lopez's handling of speaking to the referee afterwards earned him a place in the book.

Looking weary, both sides struggled to do anything with the ball after the third restart. Sloppy passes and tired legs seemed to be the order of the last 15 minutes as both teams were holding on for different reasons.

A long ball played down to Kuyt prompted the home fans to erupt with rage after the Dutchman seemed to be pulled down in the box by Alvaro Dominguez. The referee had other ideas though, as he waved for the Netherlands international to get up.

Starting to put together some neat play on the right flank, Liverpool subs Nabil El Zhar and Philipp Degen were causing problems, but the imposing figure of Atleti skipper Lopez continued to make it difficult for the Reds to find a way through.

Allowed one last sniff at goal, Dirk Kuyt bounded towards the net but lost his footing at the last minute, much to the relief of Quique Sanchez Flores in the visitor's technical area. Blowing his whistle soon after, the referee saw an even bigger sigh of elation from the Spanish coach as he knew what lies ahead.

With the score tied on aggregate 2-2, Atletico Madrid progress to meet Fulham in the Europa League final courtesy of the away goals rule. And with that, Liverpool's dreams of another European final have been dashed, while Rafa Benitez's job hangs further in the balance.

FULHAM BATTLE BACK TO REACH FINAL

Goals from Simon Davies and Zoltan Gera sent Fulham into the Europa League final with a 2-1 semi-final second leg victory over Hamburg at Craven Cottage.

After a 0-0 draw in Germany last week, the Premier League side welcomed their Bundesliga opponents to London as slight favourites to progress.

But any optimism of reaching the final, which will take place at Hamburg's Nordbank Arena on May 12, was rattled in the 22nd minute as Mladen Petric fired a superb away goal from a 30-yard free-kick.

However, fans on Craven Cottage's Hammersmith End had not given up hope and spent the second half willing the ball in their direction, with famous nights against Shakhtar Donetsk, Juventus and Wolfsburg fresh in the mind.

Fittingly it was a pass from Danny Murphy, who had described the continental campaign as a 'special adventure' earlier in the week, that allowed Simon Davies to superbly equalise in the 69th minute.

Roy Hodgson's men were then dominating their visitors and only had to wait seven minutes for the decisive goal as Zoltan Gera turned in a corner to seal a famous victory.

Gera hailed his winner as the "most important goal" of his career.

"It's the most important goal I have ever scored so I'm very, very happy. It's amazing," Gera told ITV4. "We did so well, every single player."

Fellow goalscorer Davies was equally thrilled by the performance and credited Hodgson as the motivation behind the second-half fightback.

"The manager said at half-time keep playing your football and you'll get your rewards, and we did tonight so we're buzzing," said the Welshman.

"We've played some great teams [in this competition] and come from behind. Everyone was amazing tonight."

Danny Murphy, whose pass set up Davies for the leveller, added: "It just keeps getting better.

"When we went a goal behind it would have been easy to think this was the end of the journey, but I thought the spirit we showed in the second half was tremendous."

Goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer also paid tribute to both his team-mates and manager after one of the most famous nights in the west London club's history.

Once every four years, EA Sports gets to put out a licensed World Cup game in addition to its regular FIFA offerings. This year, 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa is arriving in stores just six months after the release of the superb FIFA Soccer 10, so predictably it doesn't represent a major leap forward over that game. Some noticeable improvements have been made on the field, though, and while you won't find the same wealth of gameplay modes on offer here as in a regular FIFA release, there are plenty of options to keep you entertained while you're waiting for the next World Cup match to kick off and when you want to relive or rewrite the tournament once it's over.

Unlike FIFA 10, which features both club and international teams from all over the world, 2010 FIFA World Cup offers only international teams. You won't be left wanting, though, because while only 32 teams get to play in the finals, the game features no fewer than 199 of the squads that entered the tournament's qualification process. If you choose to jump straight into the finals in World Cup mode, you only get to play with the teams that are taking part in this year's finals in South Africa, but if you choose to play through the qualification games beforehand, you can attempt to change the fortunes of any team in the game. You're required to play a number of friendly matches in between qualification rounds, which makes the whole process take a lot longer than it needs to, but those games at least give you an opportunity to experiment with different formations and tactics just as real managers do. Leading a low-ranked team to its first-ever finals appearance is very satisfying, and playing with those teams is a much different experience than taking control of big names like Brazil, Italy, or England.

Regardless of which team you take control of, 2010 FIFA World Cup plays an entertaining and realistic game of soccer. Players are even more physical than their FIFA 10 counterparts, and it's not uncommon to see them tussling for control of the ball or just getting in each other's way. Every player on the field, as well as the referee, now has real physical presence at all times, and when they come into contact with each other or with the ball, the results are invariably believable. Players who are on the floor need to be avoided because you can't simply run through them; the referee will do his best to avoid the ball but will occasionally get hit by it; fouls are committed by players who have so much momentum that they can't avoid colliding with each other; and when the referee books one of your players for a particularly egregious tackle, the slow-motion replay generally leaves no doubt that his decision was warranted.

In regular play, you get to control every outfield player on your team, switching semiautomatically to whoever is closest to the ball. The controls are extremely responsive, and customization options include different button layouts, assistance settings for specific actions (passes, shots, crosses), and a simple two-button setup for newcomers to the series. The regular controls employ every button, both analog sticks, and even the D pad if you want to alter tactics on the fly, and there are plenty of actions that require you to press one button while holding down another. With the two-button setup, though, you just have one button for passing and pressing (the function changes according to whether you're in possession of the ball or not) and a second for shooting and sliding tackles. These controls don't afford you anything like the level of control of the regular setups, but they definitely make the game more accessible, and using them is a good way to get comfortable with the basics before you inevitably feel the need to use the "proper" controls.

Another, more challenging way to ease into 2010 FIFA World Cup is to check out the Captain Your Country mode. Like FIFA 10's Be a Pro option, this mode puts you in control of just a single player. You can choose to play as one of the thousands of pros featured in the game, create a new player from scratch, or even import your created player from FIFA 10, which is a nice touch. You then pick a country that you want to play for, and you must earn your spot in the first team by participating in B-team friendlies and the like in the months leading up to the World Cup finals. As one player on a team of 11, you're required not to chase the ball all over the field, but rather to play your chosen position realistically. Small chevrons at your player's feet point toward the area of the field that your player should be in anytime you stray from it, and a rating from 1 to 10 that appears onscreen at all times lets you know how well you're doing in the manager's eyes. If you miss a pass or unleash a shot that's off target, you might see your rating drop, but if you send in a cross that one of your strikers gets on the end of or make a crucial tackle, it goes up. Even while keeping an eye on your player and on the ball (which is still the camera's focus), it's difficult not to obsess over your individual rating. It appears alongside those of three teammates (who can be controlled by other players) and is much better than the less-precise system that served the same purpose in FIFA 10.

Inevitably, there will be times when your teammates in Captain Your Country mode frustrate you, but there are also times that you get to feel like part of a well-oiled machine as you make runs off the ball, call for passes and through balls, and try to beat or participate in offside traps. If you make captain, you also get to change tactics and set piece takers, as well as tell the goalie when to rush out and when to stay on his line, which makes you feel like you have added responsibilities much as you would wearing the captain's armband for real. Sadly, while Captain Your Country offers a fun and lasting challenge, it's not without its faults, both on and off the field.

The 19th FIFA World Cup is going to commence from 11th of June and final match will be played on 11th of July. First time any African country i.e. South Africa will host the FIFA World Cup 2010 in the cities Bloemfontein, Cape Town, Durban, Johannesburg, Kimberley, Polokwane, Port Elizabeth, Pretoria, Orkney, Rustenburg, and Nelspruit.

However, qualification process had been commenced in August 2007 and completed in November 2009. The total country qualified for the FIFA World Cup 2010 is 32.

World Cup 2010 - Brazil top rankings, England fall

Brazil have overtaken Spain at the top of the latest FIFA world rankings, with England dropping one place to eighth.

Despite struggling to qualify for this summer's World Cup finals before booking their ticket to South Africa via the play-offs, Portugal have moved up to third, switching places with Netherlands, representing their highest ever placing since the rankings were launched in 1993.

The only other change in the top 10 sees 2006 runners-up France drop below Croatia into 10th.

There are mixed fortunes among the other British Isles nations, with Republic of Ireland (44th) swapping places with Scotland (45th), while Northern Ireland (57th) and Wales (75th) dropped seven and two places respectively.

Brazil have ended Spain's five-month stint at the top of the table despite none of the leading nations playing in the past month. This is due to "the devaluation of past results", which has seen some nations rise as their more recent good results carry greater weight in the system.

Jose Mourinho-inspired Inter Milan heads to Madrid

Gerard Pique's late strike proved insufficient for Barcelona as a Jose Mourinho-inspired Inter Milan held out for more than an hour with 10 men to seal their passage to a European Cup final for the first time since 1972 despite losing 1-0 at the Nou Camp.

Mourinho's side, protecting a 3-1 lead from the first leg, were reduced to 10 men following Thiago Motta's 28th-minute dismissal, but the Italians defended heroically - and at times cynically - to deny Pep Guardiola's men.

And for Mourinho, who celebrated triumphantly on the pitch at the final whistle, it was vindication following a turbulent spell in Italy and his controversial departure from Chelsea, where he was unable to deliver a repeat of his remarkable Champions League success with Porto.

Needing a 2-0 win or better to advance, Guardiola opted for an attacking 3-4-3 line-up, with Yaya Toure alongside Pique and Gabi Milito at the back.

Inter made a last-minute change with striker Goran Pandev, originally named in the starting XI, replaced by defender Cristian Chivu.

Such a move is only allowed if an injury has occurred and Inter could yet be asked to provide evidence to that effect.

As expected, Barca completely dominated the opening stages. The Catalans had around 80% of the possession early on, but Inter were organised and looking comfortable.

Xavi brilliantly turned Wesley Sneijder on the edge of the area, but was unable to set up Ibrahimovic, who was hugely disappointing, as he has been for much of his debut season for Barcelona.

Pedro then tried his luck with a shot from distance, but Barca were struggling for inspiration.

Mourinho would have been content, but the Portuguese coach was less happy as his side went down to 10 men after 28 minutes.

In his pre-match press conference Mourinho had asked for protection from the referee, while Motta had accused Barcelona of being divers.

Although those words were seen as provocative, they also turned out to be somewhat prophetic as Sergio Busquets threw himself to the ground clutching his face after Motta had pushed him in the neck.

Mourinho sarcastically applauded the decision while Barca set about taking the initiative against Inter's 10 men.

And it looked as if they might when Messi skipped past two defenders on the edge of the box and curled a venomous low shot towards the bottom corner, only to see his effort pushed superbly around the post by Julio Cesar.

Barca were camped in the Inter area for the remainder of the half, but essentially little had changed.

Mourinho's men held out until half-time and Barca knew they were in a game, even against 10 men.

Guardiola's side still needed two goals as the second period got under way and things were not getting any easier for the Catalans.

Inter were playing the offside trap to great effect and Barca were reduced to hopeful crosses to Ibrahimovic, who was showing exactly why he has failed to win over the Catalan faithful since his big-money move in the summer.

The Swede finally departed after 63 minutes, replaced by Bojan Krkic, as Guardiola looked to add some much-needed vitality to his floundering forward line.

Barca fans pleaded for a moment of divine inspiration from Messi, but the Argentinian had failed to score in six games against Mourinho sides and that statistic appeared unlikely to change as the time ticked away.

Bojan headed agonisingly wide from Messi's cross late on, but Pique ensured a rousing finale as he collected Xavi's pass in the area, left goalkeeper Julio Cesar floored with a neat touch and rolled the ball into the empty net.

There was a hint of offside, much like Inter's third goal in Milan, but the home fans hardly cared.

The noise was deafening in the final five minutes, plus four of added time, as Barca poured forward, willed on by close to 100,000 loyal fans.

Bojan lashed home in added time, but Yaya Toure was harshly ruled to have handled and Inter survived to set up a final meeting with Bayern Munich.

Die Roten proved to be much too good for les Gones, humbling the ten-man French side at Stade Gerland...

Bayern Munich became the first team to qualify for the Champions League final, dispatching the challenge of Olympique Lyonnais with a comprehensive 3-0 win in France.

The first half was controlled by the Bundesliga club, though not to the extent they monopolised the German leg of this semi-final, but they did manage to find a much-coveted away goal when Ivica Olic pivoted to slam home from close range. Just before the hour mark, home captain Cris was controversially dismissed, before Olic added his second and third goals of the night.

In the first 80 seconds of this encounter Lyon showed more attacking endeavour than they did in the entirety of the first leg, yet the tie was nearly killed instantly when Cris was muscled off a hopeful long ball by the tenacious Olic, who squared to the unmarked Thomas Mueller in the box. Less than 12 yards from goal, the young attacker should have buried his chance, but allowed his shot to zip wide.

Mueller would be a real menace to the home rearguard, and after a speculative Maxime Gonalons drive had flown miles off target at the other end, a quick throw to the German international allowed him to tug the ball across the six yard box. Unfortunately for him, there were no on-rushing forwards, allowing OL to clear.

Lyon forays into German territory were proving rare, so it was little surprise when FCB moved into the ascendancy. Mueller took advantage of some horribly static defending from a throw-in to blitz past Anthony Reveillere and cut an intelligent ball back to Olic, who swivelled to shoot home from ten yards.

Instantly OL had their first clear sight of Hans-Joerg Butt’s goal of this tie, but Michel Bastos’ side-foot volley from little more than six yards out at the back post zipped agonisingly wide.

Now needing to commit players forward, the French club were becoming increasingly exposed at the back, with Bayern wide players Arjen Robben and Hamit Altintop both showing good touches on the counterattack. Robben had been the decisive factor at the Allianz Arena, and striking from a similar position from which he scored last week, he had a shot ruffle the side-netting, though Hugo Lloris in the home net seemed to have the ball covered.

At the other end, les Gones tried to finish with a flourish, but their evening to date was summed up when Cesar Delgado couldn’t get a shot on goal when presented with plenty of space at the extremity of the visiting box.

Claude Puel reshuffled his squad at half-time, switching his men to a 4-4-2 formation, with Bafetimbi Gomis asked to support the attack. The former Saint-Etienne man had the opportunity to make an immediate impact but scooped a volley over the top of the bar from deep inside the box following a Delgado centre.

Bastian Schweinsteiger, superb once again in the centre of the park, came close to showing the France international how it should be done as he outrageously volleyed a Robben pass goalward from 25-yards away. The German’s crisp hit flew just a whisker over the top of the crossbar.

FCB continued to be impressive on the counter. Les Gones’ defence was constantly being tugged all over the park, and when Robben was left free at the edge of the box just before the hour mark it seemed that he would strike. The Dutchman’s low curler was touched wide by a fine Lloris save.

With an hour gone, Lyon’s challenge was effectively ended by a combination of over-officious refereeing and petulance from Cris, whose initial challenge on Olic didn’t appear to be a foul. Massimo Busacca booked the centre-back for what he considered was a foul, and after the Brazilian sarcastically clapped the decision, he dully produced a second yellow card.

Though Michel Bastos finally drew a save from Butt moments later, it was soon 2-0 in favour of the Germans. Altintop broke forward purposefully down the left and waited until Olic had made his run before slipping a neat pass to the Croat, who finished beyond the exposed Lloris with an angled drive.

Suddenly the floodgates threatened to open. Dangerous crosses were frequently thrown into the home box, but the closest die Roten would come immediately was from Robben, whose thumping drive down the throat of Lloris was beaten away.

A third goal was always on the cards, and it was little surprise that when it arrived it was the industrious Olic who grabbed it, moving to the near post to thump home a header from a Philipp Lahm centre.

That proved to be the end of the scoring, but it wasn’t the end of Lyon’s torture, as they had to endure several long minutes of simply being Bayern’s plaything. Altintop should have added a fourth, but he aimed too high from close range.

The Germans fully merit their place at the Bernabeu, though they face a far greater challenge against Inter or Barcelona when they do line-up in Madrid.

Rooney wins top PFA award

Wayne Rooney and James Milner have been honoured by the Professional Footballers' Association.

Manchester United striker Rooney has been named the Professional Footballers' Association Player of the Year while Aston Villa midfielder Milner won the Young Player of the Year award.

Rooney's selection ahead of fellow nominees Cesc Fabregas, Carlos Tevez and Didier Drogba means Manchester United have supplied the winner of the prestigious award for a fourth successive year.

The 24-year-old has been in sensational form this season, scoring 34 goals for United and eight for England, and is key to the nation's World Cup hopes.

"It's a great feeling to win the player of the year award because it's voted for by the players," said Rooney.

"It's something I'm really proud of and it's a great honour.

"I remember coming here in 2005 and 2006 to win the young player of the year.

"I saw the players winning the main one and it's something I've aimed for since."

Rooney, who has only just returned from an ankle problem, missed the weekend's 3-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur with a groin injury sustained in training.

The Barclays Premier League's top scorer with 26 strikes hopes to return for United's campaign finale against Stoke City next month and promised he will be fit for the World Cup.

"The groin will be fine for the World Cup, there are no worries about that," he said.

"I'm hoping to play for United in the last game of the season."

Rooney, the first Englishman to win the award since Steven Gerrard in 2006, paid tribute to the influence United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has had on his career.

"Sir Alex is a great manager who has really brought me on as a player since I joined United," he said.

"His hunger passes through to the players. It's great to see that he's pushing 70 and hasn't changed a bit.

"I'm sure he'll be here for a long time yet."

stellar performances

Rooney was also nominated for the PFA Young Player of the Year, but that award went to Milner.

The Villa starlet appears to have played himself into Fabio Capello's World Cup squad with a string of stellar performances and the 24-year-old midfielder credited a change in position for his success this season.

"I've been moved into the middle and that suits me as it helps me influence the game a bit more," said Milner.

"Maybe sometimes wide right you want to influence the game but you just can't get yourself into it."

Leeds United legend and former South Africa captain Lucas Radebe, 41, won the PFA Merit award.

"I'm very proud to get such a great award. Sport can change the world - football has played such a big part in lifting my community," said Radebe.

The PFA divisional team of the year contains four United players, spearheaded by Rooney.

Arsenal, whose title challenge fell away in the final rounds, supply Fabregas and Thomas Vermaelen and there are also two from Chelsea in Drogba and Branislav Ivanovic.

The inclusion of Milner and Richard Dunne means Aston Villa are represented twice as well.

Barcelona 3-1 Xerez: Ibrahimovic Ignites The Nou Camp With A Goal And Assist Against Nine Men Xerez.

Barcelona piled the pressure back on Real Madrid with the score line not suggesting how well Xerez played.

Barcelona ensured they remained top of La Liga tonight with a 3-1 victory over a resilient Xerez team.

The league leaders needed to put the pressure on rivals Real Madrid, who play later this evening against Real Zaragoza, and they didn't disappoint. Two first half goals from Jeffren and Henry got them off to a comfortable start, however La Liga's bottom club, Xerez, just wouldn't back down and went in 2-1 at half time. Xerez pounded the Barca goal early in the second half, having one goal ruled out for offside. Just before the hour Barcelona effectively killed the game off when Ibrahimovic slotted home from close range and to extend their lead back to four points.

The news before the game started that could have spurred Xerez on, was that Lionel Messi would not be in the starting line up. Rested with the Champions League game in mind against Inter next week.

The game started with both teams looking to get forward but trying not to leave gaps in behind. A fine pass by Ibrahimovic from wide on the left was blocked out by the Xerez defense.

The first real chance of the game fell to Armenteros for Xerez. Henry tracking back for Barcelona felled Perez Francis with a horrible tackle from behind. Fortunately for the Frenchman he avoided a booking. The resulting cross was initially cleared by Ibrahimovic and dropped nicely to Armenteros, who took one touch to set himself and a second fine block from Ibra denied the Argentinian.

Xerez were doing the best to allow as little time as possible on the ball for Barcelona all the way to the back four. This did create some space for the dangerous midfield of the Catalan team. Xavi picked out a superb pass, splitting three players and Henry latched on it, one on one with the goalkeeper Henry couldn't get power on his shot and it was comfortable for Renan.

Just three minutes later the vision of Xavi was jaw dropping again. A pin point pass this time down the right found Jeffren. The young forward slipped and some how break-danced his way back to his feet turning the Xerez full back Casado. He closed in on goal, and found the target from a tight angle with a bullet finish to the top corner.

Xerez responded quickly and very nearly to great effect. A another free kick conceded by Henry down the right was cleverly disguised to Bermejo. The Xerez forward met the cross with a crisp volley on target but his own player blocked Bermejo's effort in front of goal.

Barcelona then went on to double their lead on 24mins. Another great pass this time by Keita slid Ibrahimovic in to the box. The big Swede squared a ball with great vision slicing the defenders and goalkeeper out the game for Henry, who had a simple finish.

This time Xerez's response was immediate. Another poor pass by Chygrynskiy was intercepted and Orrellana found Bermejo bounding in on goal in space and this time his finish flew in to the roof of the net.

It was really end to end stuff with no more than half an hour on the clock. Marquez almost restored the two goal cushion with a fizzing free kick that was inches away from the top corner with Renan beaten in the Xerez goal. Henry then released Maxwell with an inventive little back heel sending the whole defense the wrong way but Maxwell was just offside. The best chances were falling to Barcelona but Xerez were not completely outclassed.

Valdes had to be quick off his line to deny Keita for Xerez when the ball dropped to the Mali player off Jeffren at a corner. The last action of the half was Jeffren showing quite incredible pace over about 30 meters. From 10 metres behind the full back the acceleration was outstanding then finding Yaya Toure who couldn't quite squeeze the ball through to Ibrahimovic.

Xerez began the second half with a positive start. They changed formation pushing one extra into the midfield. With barely a minute on the clock, Valdes kicked straight to Orellana who composed himself and fired his shot. It was blocked by Valdes and Bermejo hit the rebound in the net but was clearly offside. Just one minute later the Xerez forward should have found the net this time onside. A perfect cross was met by Bermejo about 8 yards from the goal but Valdes read the situation well and had the header covered quickly.

After 50 minutes both Messi and Pique were introduced, with Xerez giving everything back at Barcelona from the first half. Valdes again redeeming himself for the earlier mistake acting as a keeper come sweeper clearing the Barcelona lines with two forwards lurking.

After 56 minutes Ibrahimovic deservedly got himself on the scoresheet. The introduction of Messi sparked Barcelona into fifth gear. Neat interchange by Barca around the box eventually found Yaya Toure on the left who slid the ball across the box for the Swedish international to finish in to the bottom corner.

Toure himself almost got himself a goal in the 69th minute. The ball was worked to the midfielder at the edge of the area and he blasted his shot wide.

Xerez continued to try and fight for a foot hold in the second half but the passing from Barcelona was precise and testing the fatigued opposition.

A real moment of magic in the final ten minutes. Ibrahimovic finding a deft touch through the middle of the Xerez center backs on to Messi. The little forward delicately chipped the ball over the on rushing keeper in to the vacant net but he was just offside. Even so it was still magnificent to watch!

Xavi and Toure dominated the midfield for Barcelona in the final minutes and made sure there was no nervy situations. A free kick in a dangerous position for Messi was on target but easy for Renan.

In the last minute Xerez were reduced to ten men with Alustiza seeing red for a hack on Messi. Shortly after Orellana saw another red for Xerez for an off the ball kick on Bojan.

The bottom club of La Liga certainly made Barcelona work tonight and with better finishing could have made this game closer. If Xerez had scored Barcelona looked like they always could have gone up another gear to find a goal.

Real Zaragoza 1-2 Real Madrid: Kaka Strike Keeps Los Blancos In La Liga Title Chase

A tale of three subs, as Real scrape past 10 man Zaragoza.

Real Madrid grabbed a vital three points in La Liga at La Romareda against relegation threatened Real Zaragoza.

The visitors left it late against ten men but goals from Raul, in the first half, and then Kaka in the second was enough to pull them back to within one point of leaders Barcelona.

The half began with Real Zaragoza really getting stuck in with some heavy tackles not allowing Real Madrid to settle. After five minutes a nice turn by Cristiano Ronaldo allowed him some shooting space from distance but it was reasonably easy for Roberto in goal for Zaragoza.

The hectic start finally saw Ponzio go into the book for Zaragoza. It was the third time in the opening ten minutes Ronaldo had been brought down and it was the right decision by the referee who had been trying his hardest not to bring out a card beforehand.

Madrid were stroking the ball around with confidence but after 15 minutes were dealt a blow. Van der Vaart having to be replaced after picking up an injury and hero Raul coming on.

Next to leave the field was Humberto Suazo for Zaragoza after a tangle with Ramos he seemed to have damaged his shoulder or upper arm and was replaced by Colunga.

Just after 20 minutes a series of corners for Real Madrid put some pressure on the home team but no clear chances were falling for either side despite complete dominance of possession for the visitors.

After 25 minutes Zaragoza were appealing for a penalty for handball against Ramos. The ball, if it did come off his arm, looked like it was harmless with no Zaragoza players following the cross-shot in. The referee awarded a corner for the home team waving away the few appeals.

Straight after Raul come the closest to getting the opening goal. His instinctive hit across the keeper needed a fine touch from Roberto in the Zaragoza goal to guide it on to the post, when it looked to be creeping in.

The game became very tense, almost as if both teams realized what was at stake this evening and the passing and tackling became very slack. The game couldn't flow and a sense of desperation surrounded much of the attacking play. The first half came to a close with only Raul managing to really bring Roberto in to action. Real Madrid had to find some killer passes past a stern Zaragoza defense if they were to get maximum points.

The second half began with both teams very tight, Cristiano Ronaldo finding some space on the left but put too much weight on his pass for Higuain, who was having a very quiet night.

However after 50 minutes Higuain's shot was well saved by Roberto. The rebound popped up for Ronaldo and Roberto made a fantastic stop again, third time lucky Ronaldo found substitute Raul in the middle who made no mistake from close range. Raul was immediately taken off as he seemed to have picked up a knock.

After a quiet first half, the game burst into life. Higuain went to challenge Contini for the ball and the Zaragoza player seemed to catch the Real forward with an elbow. Contini saw a straight red card to the dismay of his team mates, while Guti attempted to keep Real players away from the incident.

After 61 minutes 10 man Zaragoza were back in the game. A pass by Aguilar from inside his own half found Colunga in behind the Real defense, who fell asleep for a second, the forward rounded Casillas and slid the ball in to the empty net.

Just four minutes later Real Madrid were so very close to restoring their lead. A free kick wide on the left, taken by Guti, was met in the middle by Ramos. The Real defender leaning back generated some real power into his header and was so unlucky to see it come back off the far post and out to safety.

Real continued to press but their confidence had been dented by the equalizer and passes were often astray. With only the full backs offering width to Real's attacking play they struggled to make the extra man pay and Zaragoza continued to look dangerous on the counter finding space were Marcelo and Arbeloa would have been.

Finally with less than ten minutes remaining Real had their goal. Ronaldo drifted inside and dinked the ball into the run of sub Kaka who controlled and drilled low into the far corner beyond a helpless Roberto.

It was enough to keep Real Madrid in touch of Barcelona after their rivals had beaten Xerez earlier in the day. Real live to fight another day.

A single piece of brilliance from Nani and two Ryan Giggs penalties sent Manchester United back to the Barclays Premier League summit at Old Trafford.

When Ledley King headed Tottenham level with 20 minutes left, it seemed the Red Devils' title hopes would finally be snuffed out.

Jose Mourinho’s Internazionale exploited their home advantage as they went past Barcelona 3-1 in San Siro last night.

The defending Champions Barcelona will face an uphill task when they take on Inter in Camp Nou for the second leg encounter. Barcelona has to beat them by an aggregate of 2-0 in order to register its name in the final. But it is surely not going to be an easy task.

Barcelona could have won the match but was undone by some solid attacking maneuvers of Inter. The Catalan giants were the first one to score after Pedro received a superb pass from formerBarcelona full-back Maxwell in the 19th minute of the game and converted it into a classy goal.

The goal was a wake-up call for Inter as they did woke up and replied back in 30th minute of the game courtesy the Dutchman Wesley Sneijder.

Manchester United snatched a last-gasp victory against local rivals Manchester City at Eastlands.

Veteran midfielder Paul Scholes, who had just signed a one-year contract extension at Old Trafford, headed a dramatic winner three minutes into stoppage-time.

He cleverly steered in a cross by Patrice Evra to keep alive United's Barclays Premier League title hopes.

It was Scholes' 101st Premier League goal and it was enough to cut the gap on leaders Chelsea to just one point. It also hit City's hopes of claiming the final Champions League place.

Returning striker Wayne Rooney went close for United with a shot narrowly off target in the first half. Ryan Giggs had a close range effort saved and Carlos Tevez had a long-range free-kick well held in a match of few clear openings.

Sir Alex Ferguson feels Manchester United's defence will provide the platform for a record 19th league title.

United emerged from a potentially decisive day of Barclays Premier League action with the leadership retained thanks to their 2-1 win over Liverpool, and a four-point gap over former favourites Chelsea following their failure to beat BlackburnRovers at Ewood Park.

Although Arsenal split the pair, just two points behind the Red Devils after playing the same number of matches, the odds on an unprecedented fourth successive championship ending up at Old Trafford have started to tumble.

And, with the defence that was so ravaged by injury earlier this season now pieced carefully back together, Ferguson is looking forward with optimism.

"We have a very experienced back four and a very experienced goalkeeper. That gives us a real outstanding chance," said Ferguson.

"There are seven difficult matches - but we have all got difficult matches, so what does it matter?

"No-one is going away. We are all knocking on doors.

"If you look at the run-ins for the teams, it could very well go to the wire."

Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur look to be the most arduous tests on the run-in, once Chelsea's visit to Old Trafford on 3rd April has been negotiated.

The winner though was created by Darren Fletcher's cross and converted by Park Ji-sung's diving header, confirming the South Korean's worth to United.

"Park was fantastic," said Ferguson.

"He is one of those players we can give roles to. He has such intelligence and discipline.

A second-half goal from Park Ji-Sung gave Manchester United a crucial win over arch rivals Liverpool to take them back to the top of the Barclays Premier League.

The Korean headed home bravely from close range following a superb Darren Fletcher cross to earn his side the points at Old Trafford.

Fernando Torres had put the visitors into a fifth-minute lead with a towering header from Dirk Kuyt's cross, but Wayne Rooney soon equalised.

The England star netted his 33rd goal of the season, by scoring from the rebound after his penalty had been parried by Pepe Reina.
